Sunglasses – Style and Protection

Sunglasses are not just about style, they’re about protection too – which is why you should always make sure your shades are authentic.

Designer sunglasses are much sought after all over the world. And like all designer goods, there’s a strong market in flogging fake designer sunglasses. But it’s important to know you’re buying the real deal, not just so that you are getting that authentic sense of style, but also to protect your eyes. Style is one of the biggest considerations people make when buying a pair of sunglasses, according to a survey by the American Optometric Association.

But protection should be top of the list. If you’re buying genuine designer sunglasses including Ray-Ban, Chanel, Oakley, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Police, Gucci, Emporio Armani, Jimmy Choo, Fendi, Tom Ford, Bvlgari or Roberto Cavalli, then you can be assured the sunglasses will offer you the right protection.

Counterfeit designer sunglasses may give you a hint of the genuine style, but they’ll definitely fall short on protecting your eyesight from sun damage.

Designer Sunglasses: Quality Protection and Style

A spokesman for the American Optometric Association said in a press release about the survey: “Overexposure to UV (ultraviolet) rays has been linked to a variety of problems, including age-related cataracts and degeneration of the cornea.”

But the survey found that people felt how their sunglasses looked was more important to people than their eye health. Buying a well known, high quality designer brand like Gucci or Police will ensure you’ll receive the best protection as well as look good.

Other problems with eye health as a result of sun damage can include abnormal growths on the retina and sunburn – causing blurred vision, temporary loss of vision and even in the worst case scenario, blindness.

UV protection is a given with top designer sunglasses like Chanel or Emporio Armani. It’s another reason to make sure when you shop for designer sunglasses, you stick with the trusted brands, and buy them from trusted sources. The American Optometric Association recommends to avoid UV damage to your eyes, you should:

  • Invest in quality sunglasses that block out 99, or 100% of UV-A and UV-B radiation and 75-90% of visible light.
  • Grey lenses are the best shade to go for as they reduce the intensity of the light without changing the colour of the world around you, making them a more natural choice.
  • If you are concerned about your sight, or sun damage, make sure you get a regular eye check up.
  • Wear your sunglasses not just when it’s bright sunshine but in cloud too – UV rays can still be harmful on bright, cloudy days.
